Everything Pterodactyl backups are missing

The built-in backup system needs admin access most renters don't have. This one only needs your API key.

Owner-Controlled Backups

Your host set the backup limit to zero? Cool, that's their problem now. If you rent the server and have a client API key, you can back it up yourself.

Selective Restore

Browse the contents of any backup and restore only the files you actually need. Wiped your world save by accident? Pull just that file back.

Works With Any Host

Runs entirely through the standard client API. No admin cooperation, no plugins, no Wings modifications. Just your API key and any Pterodactyl panel.

Game-Aware Profiles

Auto-detects your game and suggests what to back up, skipping gigabytes of reinstallable engine files that have no business being in a backup.

Scheduled & On-Demand

Set a schedule and forget about it, or trigger a backup manually whenever you want. Hourly automations keep you covered, and on-demand backups are there when you need one right now.

Your Backups, Your Storage

Backups live in S3, independent of any hosting provider. Switch hosts tomorrow and your backups come with you. No questions asked.

Not all backup systems are created equal

Pterodactyl has a built-in S3 connector, but it requires admin access to configure. If you can't edit the .env on your node, you're out of luck. Here's the alternative.

Questions you probably have

And a few you did not know you had.

Pink Narwhal uses the standard Pterodactyl client API. If you can log into your panel and see your servers, you have everything you need. We compress your files on the server, download them through a signed URL, and store them in S3. No panel modifications, no special eggs, no admin involvement at any step.

Nope. Backups run while your server is live. The compression happens server-side through Wings, so your game keeps running. Restores are a different story though. We stop the server before restoring to avoid save corruption, then start it back up when we are done.

That is actually the most common reason people find us. The built-in Pterodactyl backup system respects that limit. Pink Narwhal does not use the backup system at all. We work through the file API instead, so that limit is irrelevant.

Way less than you think. We skip the engine binaries, asset bundles, and Steam files that make up the vast majority of disk usage. Those are reinstallable. Your saves, configs, and plugins are not. That is what we back up.

Yes. Every backup includes a full manifest of what was captured. When you restore, you can browse that manifest like a file tree and pick exactly what you want. Restore a single plugin config without touching your world save, or pull back just one map file.

We have smart profiles for Rust, Minecraft, DayZ, and Hytale that auto-detect the game and know which files matter. But Pink Narwhal works with any game on Pterodactyl. If we do not have a profile for your game yet, you can browse your files and pick what to back up manually.
